Annual UCP Marjon Aimhigher Summer School

Released: 16.07.08

Aim Higher Summer School

UCP Marjon’s annual Aimhigher summer school took place last week. Based at the University College, the event is funded by the Higher Education Funding Council for England (HEFCE), as part of the Government’s stated aim to increase participation in higher education to 50% by 2010.

Aimhigher focuses primarily on widening participation. We particularly target those who have no higher education tradition in their families and who are therefore not as likely to consider Higher Education as an option.

Students taking part get a taste of HE studying by staying in halls of residence and attending taster sessions for different courses. They are also introduced to various activities in and around Plymouth including beach Olympics, sumo wrestling, surfing, karaoke, BBQ’s, a bungee run and a graduation ceremony on the final day.

Abigail Miller from Redruth School said

“We’ve had a great time at the Summer School and met loads of new friends. I had no idea uni could be so much fun and there are so many opportunities. I had an idea about university before I came, but now I know so much more and definitely want to come!!”
