The Plymouth MAD (Marjon Adventure Day) took place last Sunday and proved a huge success for the City.
Despite the drizzle, 240 participants competed on the day. It was an excellent turnout for the 1st year of the event. The event took the competitors through a gruelling mixture of activities which were revealed on the day. These included cycling, abseiling, rowing, climbing and orienteering their way around Plymouth.
UCP Marjon teamed up with 29 Commando, Plymouth City Council Sports Development, the National Trust and Cogs Bikes to put on the first outdoor adventure race.
Participant Ali Northcott proved that women can easily compete with the men by posting the best score in the Long Course Individual Category. Several people, overcame their fear of heights in abseiling down the Citadel Fortress as well as climbing the Mount Batten cliff – all part of the day’s activities. One family even completed the event on a tandem.
Stan Cinnamond, Director of Sport at UCP Marjon said:
“We were overwhelmed with positive feedback regarding the day. We would like to thank the UCP Marjon students who volunteered to marshall on the day and all the organisers who helped to ensure the day ran smoothly. Due to the success of the event, we very much look forward to repeating the event on an even grander scale next year.”
