Future of Youth Work

This event was held on 25th November 2009 and was attended by over 50 practitioners, managers and leaders from across the region, from Bristol to Cornwall, representatives from six local authorities and a range of voluntary sector organisations gathered to engage in critical discussion and debate about the challenges and opportunities currently facing youth work in the context of Integrated Youth Support Services.
The seminar began with inputs from two speakers; John Miller, Head of Integrated Youth Support Service, Plymouth City Council, who spoke of Plymouth’s response to the Ofsted Report ‘Engaging Young People: Local Authority Youth Work 2005-08. This report tracks the quality and impact of youth work and recent developments in the introduction of integrated youth support. This was followed by input from Bernard Davies, the renowned youth work commentator and writer, who spoke of the findings of his research report ‘Squaring the Circle. Findings of a ‘modest inquiry’ into the state of youth work practice in a changing policy environment (Davies and Merton 2009).
