Research Background:

  • Currently researching for a PhD in Cornish Studies, based at the Institute of Cornish Studies, University of Exeter. The working title is: Social history of Cornish wrestling.
  • Acted as an historical consultant on Cornish wrestling for the Close Up television series, broadcast on BBC2 Southwest, 11th January 2001. The programme was entitled: The Final Round?
  • Acted as historical consultant on Cornish wrestling, for Sense of Place, a Cornwall Local Education Authority project, set up to promote creativity across the curriculum. It is intended that the material I produced will develop into a unit of work for primary school children. It is also hoped that the material will be used for a module in a GCSE Physical Education programme.
  • Designed, implemented and evaluated a user survey package for the Royal Borough of Kingston, London, for their recreation centre at Tolworth.
  • Produced a feasibility study for Epsom and Ewell Borough Council, Surrey, examining the potential future use of the Hook Road Arena.
  • Conducted a study of selected leisure services and facilities in north west France, on behalf of Strategic Leisure, Woking, who were interested in the similarity of leisure facilities between Brittany and England, and the potential market for their services.

 

Research Interests:

  • Sports history in general.
  • Cornish wrestling in particular and other aspects of Cornish sport, including hurling, pilot gig rowing and rugby union. 
  • Also the history of Physical Education.

 

Teaching Areas:

  • History and sociology of sport.
