Research Background:

PhD ‘Towards a definition of schwa: an acoustic investigation of vowel reduction in English’.

Have presented and published in the area of developmental phonological disorder.
Research Interests:

Vowel disorders in children with developmental phonological disorder.  

Relationship between speech processing skills and early literacy development.  I am currently working with colleagues from Queen Margaret University, Edinburgh on Sound Sensitising, a therapy resource designed to improve children’s ability to analyse and synthesise sounds in words.

I am also working with SLT colleagues on The Jolly Phonics Speech Pack, a therapy resource for use with children presenting with speech and/or early literacy difficulties, commissioned by SpeechMark Publications Ltd.

Use of re-usable learning objects (RLO) and guided observation in speech and language therapy training.  I have developed the Phonetic Transcription Self-study Programme (a Learning Space curriculum development project/College Fellowship) and am currently working with colleagues from the department and John Oates of the Open University to develop an RLO on children’s play as a vehicle for assessment and therapy.
