Research Background:
- M.Phil Post Graduate Medical School, Exeter University.
- Masters Research: Physical Activity patterns of primary aged children. A multi-method approach is being used to gather primary data. Heart rate monitoring alongside direct observation and use of questionnaires to provide a contextual study of whether young children choose to be physically active during playtimes within the school day and the factors that encourage children to make this choice.
- The Multi-skills Project. Working with another colleague to design a unit of work to be piloted in 10 primary schools in the locality. We were responsible for staff training for a group of PE co-ordinators from the schools. Follow up to the pilot consisted of a questionnaire sent out to the schools to ascertain the effectiveness and ease of use of the pilot unit. It is hoped that after analysis of the questionnaires we can re-address the unit in light of the feedback. There are a number of further projects that will lead on from this one.
- The Ernesettle Project. Working on a “design and build” project with another colleague making use of KESW funding for the research/consultancy work. This involved a healthy living initiative working with General Practitioners and other health professionals within an area of known deprivation and high levels of hypo-kinetic diseases. The project involved the development of a fitness suite available to the local community within the new purpose built surgery.
- CPD Health Initiatives and Implementation of government policies in schools.
- Planning and delivery of a CPD session for PE teachers in the Plymouth locality with a colleague. As a result of meetings we have developed a workshop of lectures and tasks to address the topic.
- Research project with 29 Commando into over-training/drop-out of Commandos.
- Research project with 29 Commando into over-training and drop-out of Commandos from the short course taken prior to the full course based at Lympstone. Specific research into whether the monitoring of certain variables such as alteration in body composition can act as a predictor of overtraining and increased risk of injury. Results were presented to the board at the Citadel and the changes we suggested as a result of our research were implemented.
- Further study linked with the project outlined above into nutritional supplementation in commandos and possible increase in success rate/reduction in injury risk.
- Post Graduate Research Paper. Research Paper submitted as part-fulfilment of the Post Graduate Diploma in Movement and Dance at the Laban Centre, Goldsmith, London University, investigating bio-rhythms and movement in a special needs environment.
- BSc. (Hons) Dissertation. Undergraduate dissertation was part of marine biological investigation into community structure and pollution monitoring, working alongside Institute of Marine Environmental Research.
