What we look for

When we are consdering your application, we look for a number of indicators:

  • For undergraduates, predicted and achieved academic performance in level 2 and 3 qualifications (for acceptable qualifications and equivalencies see entrance requirements). Where appropriate, we would normally expect you to extend your studies beyond the traditional choice of three A levels, ie, by studying four GCE AS levels in Year 12 and continuing to at least two full A levels.  However, you should refer to our general entrance requirements.  For postgraduates, the predicted classification of your degree.
  • The content of your personal statement
  • Your reference

Your personal statement should contain:

  • Reasons for the choice of subjects taken at A level or equivalent and in some cases, where appropriate, the relevance of those subjects to your chosen degree course
  • Reasons why you’ve applied for a particular degree(s) or programme and how this relates to your current/previous studies and experiences and your future plans
  • If you have a career goal, describe how the University College or the course would assist you in fulfilling that ambition
  • Evidence of motivation to learn at a higher level. It is important for us to recruit students who have the potential and the drive to succeed
  • Details of any work experience, paid or unpaid, and any other positions of responsibility that you’ve had. We’re particularly interested in the skills gained from these experiences and how they relate to your own personal development and/or how they may assist with your study and life at university
  • Details of accreditation received or non-accredited skills and achievements that you have gained through activities such as Duke of Edinburgh Award Scheme of Young Enterprise in preparation for Higher Education
  • Where appropriate, planned intentions for a gap year and any sponsorships or placements you have applied for and how you feel this will benefit you
  • Information regarding extra-curricula activities and again what has been gained in terms of experience and skills from these interests. An appropriate balance in a range of activities is particularly welcomed.
  • Your hobbies and interests
  • For ITT courses, it is vital that you include any classroom experience (work or voluntary) or arrangements that you have made to gain experience. Failure to do so could jeopardise your chance of a place.

For undergraduate applications we need you to supply an academic reference from your school or college.  For postgraduate applications, we would expect to see an academic reference if you have been in education in the last 5 years. It will be difficult to gain a place without one. Your referee should be someone who can comment on your ability to succeed on the course, and is usually one of your teachers or tutors. If you have not been in education for this time, your refereeshould be someone who is able to talk professionally about your application and potential, such as an employer or training officer.  The chosen referee cannot be a family member or friend.
