BA (Hons) Children, Welfare and Society
Introduction
As society increasingly focuses on the welfare of children and families, this programme explores this arena from a broad social science perspective. The Children, Welfare and Society programme aims to provide a stimulating journey into understanding contemporary perspectives on children, young people and families. Year 1The aim of this year is for you to explore many of the different perspectives which attempt to make sense of society and the arena of child welfare, all within a broad social science framework. You will study areas such as social policy, inequalities, development and communication and develop your understanding of social structures, processes and change. You will embark on an exploration of your understanding, values and position in relation to the different perspectives.
Year 2
The second year of the programme develops on the learning in year 1. There are a variety of compulsory and optional modules which focus on the relationship between theory, policy and practice and you can develop on particular areas of interest including working together collaboratively, working with groups, social environments and education. You can also take an opportunity to learn from working in the field.
Year 3
During year 3 you will develop an extended piece of research (supervised dissertation) which enables you to explore in depth, an area of interest. You can also choose from a variety of optional modules which really enable you to develop your understanding and position in a variety of ‘specialist’ areas.

If you have undertaken a programme of study at A Level or Access and are interested in exploring a career working with children,young people and families, this programmewill help you to identify the wide range of career opportunities available in Children’s Services. The programme also offers a strong foundation for post-graduate professional qualification in teaching, social work, youth and community work, and for early years professional status. If you already have experience of working with children and families you might also like to consider BA (Hons) Working with Children and Young People.
