BA (Hons) Youth and Community Work
Introduction
Out of 108 institutions, UCP Marjon ranked 11th for overall student satisfaction and top 10 for teaching, assessment and feedback, academic support and organisation and management in the 2009 National Student Survey. These results are for the Social Work subject area which includes this course.
In 2008, the National Youth Agency introduced an additional category ‘Satisfactory with distinction’ into their annual monitoring of Higher Education programmes leading to national professional qualification of youth workers. This course achieved this top category, out of the 50 programmes monitored, only 8 were awarded this category placing UCP Marjon in the top 16% of courses nationally.
The BA (Hons) Youth & Community Work programme at UCP Marjon has again been awarded the highest category ‘satisfactory with distinction’ in the National Youth Agency Annual Monitoring Report, 2009. Out of 67 UK programmes evaluated – 14% were awarded the top category and UCP Marjon came 9th out of 67 which now places us within the top 10.
Youth work is primarily focused on young people aged 13–19. It can be carried out in a range of settings, youth projects, information and advice projects, in schools and on the street.
You’ll have the opportunity to develop the understanding, skills and practical experience required to work positively with others. This course has been designed to meet the new requirements of the National Youth Agency for a graduate qualification for the youth work profession.

Our typical minimum entry requirements for applicants with A levels/AS levels/BTEC is 180 points. Applications from students with non-traditional qualifications are welcome. A CRB check and ISA registration are also required.Module Information
Year 1You will develop knowledge and understanding of youth and community work – its history, its purpose and its place in supporting young people’s development. You will develop skills in communication and anti-oppressive practice. Alongside the taught elements, you will begin to develop your ‘professional self’ through the completion of a placement working with young people aged 13–19. Placements can be in a range of settings, for example in youth projects, in schools, in information and advice projects or in street-based projects.
Year 2
The taught modules in year 2 focus on the management and development of youth work opportunities. You will develop knowledge, understanding and skills in managing work, supervision, developing strategy and implementation of policy. You will complete your second placement, a block of 12 weeks, working full-time in a different
organisation. During this placement you will develop and manage a project, putting to use the knowledge, understanding and skills gained so far.
Year 3
In your final year, you are encouraged to direct your own learning through your dissertation and placement module and you have a choice of modules. This recognises your professional journey to date – and the need to take responsibility for your own professional development now and in the future. Your placement will enable you to further develop your skills in research and practice, undertaking a piece of participative research for a youth and community project such as a needs assessment or an evaluation.

Additional Information
Youth Work goes to graduate status. Nationally, the professional qualification for youth work is changing, from Diploma in Higher Education to BA degree. Students enrolling in September 2008 will be the final group to qualify at the Diploma stage (after two years full-time), after this professional qualification status will require three years full time study.
