Out of 108 institutions, UCP Marjon ranked 11th for overall student satisfaction and top 10 for teaching, assessment and feedback, academic support and organisation and management in the 2009 National Student Survey. These results are for the Social Work subject area which includes this course.

The Working with Children and Young People programme aims to provide you with the opportunities to develop your knowledge, skills and understanding to work in this dynamic arena. The programme offers a challenging range of learning experiences where you can develop your understanding of contemporary practice in a variety of specialist and generic areas of study, to enable you to progress into careers or further professional education.

Year 1During this year you will explore many of the different perspectives which attempt to make sense of society and children and young people’s social worlds, all within a broad social science framework. Studying areas such as social policy, inequalities, development and communication you will develop your understanding of social structures, processes and change. Exploring different perspectives and developing an understanding of your values and position in relation to the different perspectives is a key aim of this year.
Year 2
Developing on from the learning in year 1, you will focus on the relationship between theory, policy and practice through a variety of compulsory modules exploring areas such as working with groups, youth policy, education and research. You also choose a specialist ‘route’ in a variety of exciting areas.
Year 3
During year 3 you will develop an extended piece of research (supervised dissertation) which enables you to explore in depth, an area of interest. You can also choose from a variety of optional modules which really enable you to develop your understanding and position in relation to your chosen specialist ‘route’.

The importance of work with children, young people and families is increasingly being recognised by the government. A highly skilled, graduate, children’s workforce is a key government objective within the ‘Every Child Matters: Change for Children Agenda’. There are now a wide range of exciting opportunities to work with children, young people and families. This programme offers a strong foundation for both employment, and for ongoing professional development and qualification (for example: in teaching, social work, youth and community work and the new early years professional status). If you have very little experience of working with children, young people or families you might also like to consider BA (Hons) Children, Welfare and Society.
