Module Information

Year 1
You will develop knowledge and understanding of youth and community work – its history, its purpose and its place in supporting young people’s development. You will develop skills in communication and anti-oppressive practice. Alongside the taught elements, you will begin to develop your ‘professional self’ through the completion of a placement working with young people aged 13–19. Placements can be in a range of settings, for example in youth projects, in schools, in information and advice projects or in street-based projects.

Year 2

The taught modules in year 2 focus on the management and development of youth work opportunities. You will develop knowledge, understanding and skills in managing work, supervision, developing strategy and implementation of policy. You will complete your second placement, a block of 12 weeks, working full-time in a different
organisation. During this placement you will develop and manage a project, putting to use the knowledge, understanding and skills gained so far.

Year 3
In your final year, you are encouraged to direct your own learning through your dissertation and placement module and you have a choice of modules. This recognises your professional journey to date – and the need to take responsibility for your own professional development now and in the future. Your placement will enable you to further develop your skills in research and practice, undertaking a piece of participative research for a youth and community project such as a needs assessment or an evaluation.
