Playwork Leadership and Management Training 2010
UCP Marjon is helping to deliver an exciting package of fully funded training for leaders and managers in play (in partnership with HTI)
The Children's Plan clearly recognises the need for professionally qualified leaders in Playwork and makes a general statement that 'delivering a world-class system will rely upon confident leaders who can deliver excellence in their own institutions and can work with other leaders to provide the best possible services for children and young people'. The need for strong, well-trained leaders and managers throughout the whole children's workforce was further reinforced in the recently-published 2020 Children and Young People’s Workforce Strategy.
The Children's Workforce Development Council (CWDC) is leading on a range of developments with SkillsActive to support 200 people per year working in leadership and management roles across the play workforce. These developments will enable participants to build confidence and to benefit from high quality, graduate level leadership and management training and development, and equip them to lead and manage in the context of integrated children's services.

Who is the course for?
The course is for those whose role requires them to think strategically about playwork as part of integrated children's services, such as:
• middle managers in local authorities
• play rangers and play champions
• leaders in play pathfinder and playbuilder local authorities
• play service managers, senior/lead practitioners
This course enables you to explore creative and flexible approaches in the management of playwork services. You will build your confidence as an advocate for play values that maintain a focus on outcomes for children, young people, parents and carers.
This is achieved by developing your management and leadership skills, and your ability to use reflective practice for yourself and those you work with. We also help you to develop a strategic focus for playwork within integrated services.
This includes
• how to manage stakeholder relationships across all sectors
• understanding how playworker roles operate within this context
• the Common Assessment Framework
• the lead professional role
Eligibility
Applicants will typically need:
• at least one year's management/supervisory experience in a playwork setting
• knowledge of child development and the core values of playwork, whether on a paid or voluntary basis
• commitment to continuing professional development and collaborative working
• to evidence their ability to benefit from a level 6 (final year undergraduate) course
• computer skills plus access to a PC
There may be some flexibility in the entry requirements providing you have other relevant learning or experience.
What will be included in the programme?
The programme has been approved by a Board of partners led by the Children's Workforce Development Council to run nationally. The content includes: models and styles of leadership; management skills; strategic thinking in the context of children's integrated services; advocacy for play values while maintaining a focus on outcomes for children, young people and carers; playworker roles in relation to the Common Assessment Framework; supporting and developing staff; leading and managing teams; supervision, coaching and mentoring; partnership working; reflective practice. As important will be the way we work together, collaboratively, and with criticality, and underpinned by a commitment to reflective practice.
What are the dates?
9.15-3.00 on 14th/15th September 2010, 16th/17th November 2010 and 11th/12th January 2011 plus participation in Action Learning Sets (times to be mutually agreed)
How will the course be delivered?
The course will be delivered through a combination of face-to-face group learning sessions, supported online and face to face contact with tutors and personal and work-based reflective learning. Participants will also join an action learning set which will allow you to explore your own leadership thinking and practice in a supported and facilitated environment.
What assessment will there be?
The portfolio of assessed work you submit will build on the activities you undertake as we go through the programme. This will include a reflective learning log and learning plan.
Will the assessment gain university credits?
Having passed the assessed work, participants may be awarded 30 credits at final year undergraduate level.
