BA (Hons) Education Studies

Introduction

The Education Studies Programme aims to provide an academically challenging and intellectually rigorous course of learning that develops the skills and competencies relevant to the increasing professional opportunities for employment in educational and other professional contexts. Specifically, the Programme aims to engage students with concepts of individual and social change and development, the nature of knowledge, and critical engagement with ways of knowing.

This programme will be of particular interest to those students wishing to pursue a career related to education – whether teaching, educational welfare or other related professions, here or abroad.  In a ‘knowledge economy’ and with an emphasis on ‘lifelong learning’, education is seen to be of crucial importance for individuals and societies – potentially the most important thing for economic prosperity, social justice and a more sustainable future.  Through active inquiry into contemporary educational issues, policies and debates surrounding the purpose and possibilities of education, students will develop their understanding, skills, and personal and professional identities.

Career Opportunities

On successful completion, our graduates will be equipped to engage with an increasing range of learning and employment opportunities associated with lifelong learning and sustainability, for example, Teaching [PGCE], Early Years Education, Community Education, Youth Work, Children’s Workforce Professionals, Educational Management, Welfare and Administration, Library and Information Management Professionals, Language Analysts, the Media and Publishing – both in this country and internationally.  The understandings and skills developed during their time here will not limit them to these professions however, and we aim to ensure they develop the generic/holistic skills that employers are looking for in graduates of the twenty first century.
