Chemistry Enhancement Course (CHEC)

Introduction

This course is designed to enable you to enhance your knowledge and understanding of Chemistry.  On completion of the course, participants will have enough subject knowledge to enter onto the PGCE Secondary Science course.

This 28 week (14 units) course is full time from 4th January to 13th July 2012.

Entry Requirements

Applicants must hold a degree in a science subject and one of the following:

  • A level and/or vocational experience in Chemistry.  In exceptional cases a combination of broader experience may be considered.  A very limited number of case study places are available
  • A real desire to teach Chemistry at Secondary School Level
  • A conditional offer onto a PGCE, SCITT or GTP is needed to start the course.  This enables you to go straight onto the PGCE, SCITT or GTP upon successful completion.

Module Information

The course has 6 units, which cover:

  • Introduction to Chemistry
  • Physical, inorganic and organic chemistry
  • Work on the environment and materials

The course is split into approximately 40% lectures/activities; 40% practical/problem solving, with 20% independent study.

Also included on the course are visits to local companies. The course aims to give a deep knowledge of Chemistry linked to examples and activities that can be used in your teaching. Much of the course is delivered using multimedia and interactive learning activities.

Fees and Funding

There is no tuition fee. Students will be paid a total tax free bursary of £5,600 for the duration of the course, payable in monthly installments.
