The course is designed with the aim of helping you become the best teacher of Art and Design that you can be. To develop you as a quality teacher you will be exploring how all pupils can engage positively with art, how they can be encouraged to express their creativity, how their lives can be enriched through this and how they can come to a better understanding of themselves and the world through art.
You will be engaged in developing your own skill and knowledge base in a range of practical areas and in devising exciting and challenging schemes of work that you will use in schools. You will also be encouraged to continue with your own practice as an artist because we believe that your continuing development as a practitioner has a vital role in informing your work in the classroom.
W1X1
1 year full time
The first module of Applied Subject Studies in Art and Design is built around the main subject knowledge areas of drawing, painting, printmaking, sculpture, ceramics, textiles and ICT. You will look at developing your own expertise in these areas and exploring how to teach this subject knowledge effectively.
In the second module these areas are contextualised more comprehensively. You will look at how personal and global issues can be explored through art; you will develop ideas that draw on the art from other cultures; you will investigate how contemporary art practice can inform the work you do in schools; you will see how partnerships with artists and galleries can work in schools and we will look at external exams.
The partnership developed between the Art and Design course at the University College and the local schools in Plymouth, Devon and Cornwall is excellent.
As a former Head of Art in Cornwall, Rollo Braham chose to work with student teachers from UCP Marjon and saw nearly all secure a teaching post by the end of the course. In addition, four out of the last five art appointees he made in his school had been trained at UCP Marjon. Art and Design graduates who are able to move further afield will find a wider range of posts, and in previous years, have been successful in gaining employment.
What our students say:
“The thing I find most rewarding about teaching art is helping somebody to create something they can be truly proud of”.
Emma Garland, PGCE Secondary Art and Design
