The course is designed to equip you with the knowledge and understanding that you need to become a successful Secondary ICT teacher. The main subject focus is on the requirements of the National Curriculum Programme of Study for ICT. Key subject topics include using data and information processing; strategies for searching, selecting, organising and investigating; creating multimedia; models and modelling; and how to present information effectively.
ICT has a lot to contribute to other subjects and this is considered on the course.

In broad terms there are three main components of the course. Together, they help you to meet the statutory Standards for the Award of Qualified Teacher Status. All three are delivered by a partnership between UCP Marjon and local schools.
The first component concerns subject studies; in other words the focus is on ICT and on issues associated with teaching this subject within the framework of the National Curriculum. There are plenty of opportunities for practical activity and discussion. Sharing, collaboration and mutual support are strongly encouraged.
The second component concerns the professional study of issues that are relevant to all teachers. Coverage includes topics such as strategies for effective teaching and learning; planning lessons and setting learning objectives; assessment of pupil learning, and how this can inform pupil progression and achievement; ways of ensuring inclusion and progress for all pupils, including personalised learning; the professional values expected of teachers in their attitudes and behaviour towards pupils and colleagues.
The third component is the time spent in school on teaching practice. Student teachers spend most of the time with pupils in the 11–16 age range, but there are also opportunities to work with post 16 students. Time in school, which includes observation, team teaching and solo teaching, is where all the aspects of the course are brought together.

The course has excellent links with schools in the South West and many trainees go on to teaching posts in the region as well as nationally. Many local schools have UCP Marjon trained ICT teachers who have built successful careers on the foundations laid by the course. You may even work with some of them during your practice.
