BA (Hons) Live Music 2 Year Accelerated Programme
Introduction
This new 2 year programme is delivered in partnership with our renowned industrial partners, Deep Blue Sound. You will have the opportunity to develop the technical, creative and business skills needed to work in the Live Music industry including lighting and sound engineering, musical composition and event design and management.
Candidates meeting the general points requirement but without formal music qualifications are welcome to apply.
The aim of the course is to provide an exciting and innovative programme of study which delivers the latest trends from music industry experts, high level practical skills with rigorous academic underpinning. This course is not genre specific; students with an interest in any musical style will be given the opportunity to develop their practice and theoretical knowledge of live performance. Students will select a route through the course which reflects their own professional objective as either a musical performer, a music technologist, a media practitioner or an entrepreneur staging live music events.

Entry Requirements
Our typical minimum entry requirement for applicants with A levels/AS levels/ BTEC is 240 points. Other similar qualifications may be considered on an individual basis. All applicants will have to provide a portfolio of work or undertake an audition at interview, which demonstrates satisfactory musical, technical and creative skills. Candidates meeting the general points requirement but without formal music qualifications, are welcome to apply.
Module Information
Students will begin with a grounding in the techniques and technologies associated with live music performance as well as being exposed to the new emerging business models driving the live music industry. There will be ample opportunity to focus on practical music making in a range of contexts and to tackle the theoretical fields of genre and aesthetics.
Following this introduction period, students be given the opportunity to extend and consolidate technical skills in the area of digital audio and performance technology in preparation for the move to a live music industry context . There will be theoretical discourse around the function of live music in society and psychological effect of music on performers and audiences. The business route in the second year will concentrate on developing markets.
In the final period of the course, students will gain their all important music industry experience. During this period of the course, students work with an increased degree of independence, creating large scale projects. Taught modules will deal with the legal side of live performance, modern communications technologies and management theory as it applies to the live music industry.

Aside from the obvious creative opportunities offered to performers there are a myriad of other career paths associated with the staging of a live performance event, ranging from the technologists who engineer, light and record the event through to those who organise, publicise, manage and exploit its earning potential.

Facilities:
This programme will make use of a purpose built studio space which can be transformed into different performance environments, ranging from a small classical music venue, a jazz club, a dance music venue or a multimedia art gallery. This space also provides recording facilities and students will have access to a suite of digital workstations to undertake their work.
