BA Outdoor Studies Progression Course

Introduction

Entry is directly into year three of the BA (Hons) Outdoor Adventure programme and provides access to a suite of honours level modules:

• Outdoor Studies will develop a student’s subject knowledge and understanding, their cognitive skills and transferable key skills. Outdoor Studies is very much an applied experience which develops a student’s theoretical and practical skills

• This one year progression route will undertake an in-depth look at many of the key facets of this multidimensional subject area. This includes the social, psychological and physical benefits of participation, educational potential and environmental concerns

• The necessary preparation to undertake research and develop research skills, by the encouragement of analytical thinking, through a variety of learning modes

• The ability to develop a greater awareness of the world of work in Outdoor Studies

• Working with, through and for the natural environment in a way that benefits all, targeting realistic career goals based on a student’s involvement and modular choice within the subject

• Transferable skills that will be useful to students before and after graduation (e.g. effective intellectual and practical skills, effective writing, interactive communication skills, search and research skills, critical thinking, and the ability to understand unfamiliar points of view)

Entry Requirements

A successful completion of a Foundation Degree (FdA or FdSc) PLUS a successful piece of bridging work. The bridging work is a detailed research proposal for the dissertation. When submitted it needs to include a considered research question along with an appropriate research strategy. Whilst guidance for this work may be given, a degree of independent learning and study is essential in order to develop the intellectual capacities to undertake the dissertation which is a significant feature of the BA Outdoor Studies programme. This progression route, or ‘top-up’ degree course, is for students with a Foundation Degree (FdA) in Adventure Education Management, or similar (please contact the programme leader), who want to graduate with a BA (Hons). A CRB check and ISA registration are also required

Module Information

  • A rigorous intellectual programme of study in the cognate areas of Outdoor Studies, that develops students subject knowledge and understanding, their cognitive skills, and transferable key skills, through academic and applied experience which develops their theoretical and practical skills
  • An in-depth understanding and analysis of Outdoor Studies, its antecedents, social, psychological and physical benefi ts of participation, educational potential, environmental concerns, in total the many different facets of this multi-dimensional subject area
  • The necessary preparation to undertake research and develop research skills, by the encouragement of analytical thinking, through a variety of learning modes
  • The ability to develop a greater awareness of the world of work in Outdoor Studies. Working with, through and for the natural environment in a way that benefi ts all, targeting realistic career goals based on their involvement and modular choice within the subject

Employment opportunities exist in a variety of professions, including Outdoor Adventure Centres, Management Training and Local Authority Provision. Some have become trek leaders or instructors. Others undertake postgraduate study, PGCE, PGDip or Masters.

Additional Information

The Outdoor Studies students spend their taught time with students from the Outdoor Adventure degree. Direct entrants are welcomed and integrated into the‘family’ of student life at UCP Marjon. The holistic approach to Outdoor Studies means that this is acourse that offers so much more than just a series of practical experiences.
