BA (Hons) Sports Development
Introduction
Sports Development includes the provision of opportunities for people of all ages, genders, ethnicities and abilities to participate in sport; the developmentof new facilities to support and provide activities;the development of sports organisations and their structures; the development of individuals within sport from foundation levels to excellence; the development of communities through sport. The course aims not only to prepare students for employment in these areas,but also for a range of other sport-related careers.

Our typical minimum entry requirements for applicants with A levels/AS levels/BTEC is 220 points.
Applications from students with non-traditional qualifications are welcome. A CRB check and ISA registration are also required.
Module Information
Year 1
The first year introduces students to the key knowledge and skills of Sports Development and develops the fundamental study skills necessary for success at undergraduate level. Other subject areas covered include Coaching, Health and Fitness, the Organisation and Structure of Sport and the Provision of Sport in the Community.
Year 2
The second year develops the concepts, issues and theories introduced in the first year and allows students to choose from a number of optional modules to match their career aspirations. Sports policy and research methods are the 2 compulsory modules, whilst optional modules include health and fitness for specific populations, sport in education, resource management in sport, practical sports development and managing events. There is also a placement module. Students have the opportunity to embark on a specialist pathway.
Year 3
In the third year students have the opportunity to applythe knowledge and skills acquired in the previous 2 years in real Sports Development situations, and complete a dissertation based on an area of their choice. Optional modules include International Perspectives, Teaching PE, Strategic Management and Exercise Prescription for specific populations.There is also a placement within a disability situation. Students have the opportunity to continue with their chosen pathway.

Career Opportunities
Graduates have found employment in a range of jobs (e.g. sports development officer for a national governing body, a sports development officer for a local authority; a sports development officer for a regeneration company); management (e.g. managerof a leisure centre; deputy manager of private fitness suite and health and fitness (e.g. aerobics instructor;gymnasium instructor). Others have taken PGCE courses leading to careers in Primary Education or Secondary Physical Education teaching. Students are also considered for the UCP Marjon’s MA in Applied Sport Development.

Opportunities:
There is an opportunity to undertake a work placement in the second year, which you are strongly urged to take advantage of, to work with a disability group and with local Primary School children in the third year. There are also a number of modules where you will be encouraged to make contact with the local community.
