BSc (Hons) Health Exercise and Physical Activity

Introduction

This innovative degree programme applies principles of health, fitness and nutrition to enhancing the human condition and physical performance. You will gain accreditation by the industries’ professional body (REPS), and will be recognised as an ‘Exercise professional’ upon completion. Other courses such as advanced gym instruction, Pilates, aqua aerobics,exercise to music and emergency first aid are all integrated into the curriculum.

Entry Requirements

Our typical minimum entry requirements for applicants with A levels/AS levels/BTEC is 220 points including an A-level or equivalent pass in either:

  • PE/Sports Studies or
  • Mathematics or
  • Science (not necessary for BTEC applicants)
  • and another A-level or equivalent. Other similar qualifications maybe considered on an individual basis
  • A CRB check and ISA registration are also required

Module Information

Year 1
Year 1 is designed to increase your knowledge, skillsand understanding in exercise and health physiology,nutrition and psychology. Socially constructed stereotypes of the human body are also examined.‘Applied Practice in Health and Exercise’ provides an opportunity for you to attain a fitness industry level 2 award in gym instruction, aqua aerobics or exercise to music. Health screening, fitness testing and assessment of body composition are also introduced.

Year 2

Year 2 develops theoretical and practical skills in strength and conditioning, weight management,research methods and exercise programming. You will work with clients in order to develop and deliver personalised nutrition, sport, and exercise programmes.Year 2 continues your progress towards the level 3 advanced fitness instructor qualification and provides an opportunity for you to select a specialist pathway.

Year 3
We encourage you to direct your own degree through dissertation and placement modules. Specialist areas include ‘Exercise Prescription’, ‘Physical Education’,‘Leadership Training’ ‘Holistic Approaches to Healthy Living’ and ‘Advanced Strength and Conditioning’. You will work with clients including referred patients to practise your professional and interpersonal skills. Our course conference invites specialist speakers to lecture on reflexology, Pilates, aromatherapy, hypnotherapyand low back pain to stimulate some exciting debate!

Career Opportunities

Because of extra funding committed by the Government, the programme will provide diverse careers in the health and fitness industry, NHS trainers, personal training, physical education (via PGCE), the NHS, Local Government physical activity and health promotion, armed forces PTI instruction and postgraduate study.

Additional Information

Recently staff have secured NHS funding to expand the low back exercise referral programme. Students are encouraged to use this experience to inform assignments, dissertations and research. Students are also encouraged to contribute to the programme’songoing research project into the health benefits of the Nintendo Wii. Fieldwork and Placements. Each year of the degree programme you will have placement opportunities that take place in a variety of providers across the city.
