BSc (Hons) Strength and Conditioning

Introduction

This is a science-based vocationally oriented programme including detailed study in selected areas of both the biological and social sciences. These subject areas include strength and conditioning with physiology, anatomy, kinesiology, biomechanics and performance coaching. Accompanying laboratory and practical components assist in the delivery, understanding and application of these areas.This programme will provide an honours level experience for students progressing from Strength Conditioning and Coaching related Foundation Degrees. The programme will offer the opportunity to consolidate and build on the student’s previous experience by providing a modular programme that extends and develops the student and provides an opportunity to research an area of special interest.

Year 3 only
The Strength and Conditioning programme will enable students to study the theoretical basis and practica lapplication of strength and conditioning, but a salien tfeature of the programme will focus on preparing graduates for employment. Therefore the programme will seek to contextualise the curriculum by embedding vocationally relevant material in appropriate modules. The ‘Advanced Strength and Conditioning’ module will allow students to demonstrate technical proficiency across weightlifting, plyometrics,speed, agility, endurance and flexibility practice whilstl earning to design, deliver and evaluate training programmes.

Students will be encouraged to work towards accreditation to the UK Strength and Conditioning Association. Other examples of practical/vocational modules include: ‘Performance and Technique Analysis’, where students will be encouraged to model performance through analysis of sports technique based on biomechanical principles; and ‘Advanced Applied Sports Physiology’ which enables students to become equipped with the skills to conduct physiological analyses of sports performance. In addition, students will have numerous opportunitiesto engage in the delivery of strength and conditioning and sport science support to athletes across the region.

Students will also complete a dissertation in 1 of these areas of specific interest to them.

Career Opportunities

The successful completion of the programme will give the graduate the skills necessary to work as a strength and conditioning coach, fitness instructor, sports coach in leisure centres, sports clubs and gyms or to specialise in sport and exercise science. Students may also be able to progress on to a PGCE in Secondary Physical Education or the MA programme in Sports Development, having gained the necessary entry criteria.
