Our Work Worldwide
As will be seen on the map identifying our work worldwide, UCP Marjon has had international experience in many contexts. Below some of these contexts are added to and developed to provide a fuller view of our experience.
Case studies in Malaysia, China, Chile, Mexico, Romania, Namibia, Bangladesh and Anthology
UCP Marjon has been involved in English language teacher training in Malaysia for 25 years now. Recently, this has included participation in:
A major primary teacher training BEd twinning programme, working in partnership with a key teacher training institution in Malaysia.
A major secondary teacher training B Ed twinning project, with the College coordinating training activities in 5 UK institutions and a key Government institution in Malaysia
A teacher education project developing new curricula and methodologies in Malaysia's training colleges
A project to develop a Quality Assurance system for the national teacher training college system.
Case Study 2: China - Shanghai English Language Teaching Improvement ProjectIn 2002, we began working with the British Council and Shanghai Teacher Training Centre on a programme which will provide continuing professional development opportunities for up to 13,000 teachers of English. The SETIP project affects both the primary and middle school sectors, and has a lifespan of up to 5 years.
Case Study 3: ChileOur Chilean links have focussed on teacher educatjon in Art at primary and secondary levels, and English at secondary level. Our role has been to provide short courses for teachers in UK in new approaches, methodologies and materials and the development of the teachers' own competencies. An interesting feature of the Art teachers' programme was the successful use of interpretation and translation (English/Spanish) in the teaching-learning process.
Case Study 4: MexicoOver the last twelve years we have delivered a series of postgraduate programmes in ELT and Trainer Development for a consortium of Western Mexican Universities and for the Anglo-Mexican Cultural Institute in Mexico City. We are now embarking on a B Ed programme for serving teachers in AMCI.
Case Study 5: RomaniaFrom 1992 to 1999 we provided training and consultancy services to the British Council sponsored Secondary Textbook project, resulting in the publication of the highly regarded 'Pathway to English' series by Oxford University Press. The authors were all local secondary teachers of English and most have now gone on to use their writing skills in other projects.
Case Study 6: NamibiaIn Namibia, we delivered a successful M Ed programme in Teacher Training for ELT (over 20 graduates) within the context of the English Language Teacher Development project (1996-2000). We also provided In-Service Training and Educational Management consultancies.
Case Study 7: BangladeshWe were a link institution to the DFID/British Council English Language Teaching Improvement Project since its inception in 1998. We have provided courses in Plymouth for trainers, resource centre managers and textbook writers (with follow-up workshops in Bangladesh) and in-country consultancy in materials design, resource centre management, action research and evaluation. Recently we have also provided consultancy to the PROMOTE and SHAPLA projects, the former involving educational reform and development, and the latter health sector training and materials design.
The Centre of International Education has published a short anthology of case studies of its work around the world in recent years. Contributors include Mike Scholey writing about Russia, Michael Hall about Chile, Tony Wright about Mexico and Pat McLaughlin about Bangladesh. There are also articles from Steve Ansell and Rod Bolitho, the editors of the anthology, focusing on a number of international contexts. Some of the case studies have been written in collaboration with project partners.
The anthology provides a useful and interesting view of the range and scope of University College’s international work.
