The History of International Students at UCP Marjon
Research by the International Education Centre and Library Staff discovered that the first International Students at the College were three Young Syrian men and that was as far back as 1842, over 165 years ago. They came to what was then, St Mark, to learn English in order that they could subsequently study medicine. One might guess that they were perhaps the first international students in England on a 'pre-sessional' English Course.
Our recent International Anthology - 'Marjon around the World'
The Centre of International Education has published a short anthology of case studies of its work around the world in recent years. Contributors include Mike Scholey writing about Russia, Michael Hall about Chile, Tony Wright about Mexico and Pat McLaughlin about Bangladesh. There are also articles from Steve Ansell and Rod Bolitho, the editors of the anthology, focusing on a number of international contexts. Some of the case studies have been written in collaboration with project partners.
In this short anthology of case studies we have collected together six accounts of our work in International Education in recent years. They are chosen to illustrate the principles we have always tried to hold to in our international partnerships, and to give an impression of the range of our project involvement both geographically and in terms of content areas. We have worked regularly and successfully in four continents: Asia, Africa, Europe and Central/South America. Our partnerships have been with institutions, with Ministries, with Non-Governmental Organisations and with a number of governmental aid bodies. In terms of content, we have developed a reputation for our work in Resource Centre Management, Teacher and Trainer Development, Textbook and Materials Projects, Curriculum Design and for the delivery of a range of Postgraduate qualifications in-country. All of these areas are represented in this collection.
