Travel & visas

There are many wonderful places to visit here in the South West of England and in the rest of Britain and Europe.  Travel in Britain can be expensive so you should book tickets well in advance and make the most of cheap ticket offers.  Here are some useful links to help you plan your journey.

Remember to check if you need a visa before travelling to a different country.  If you are travelling to Europe you may need to obtain what is called a Schengen Visa.

You can find plenty of websites with information about the local area, a lot of it commercial but some of it more cultural and historical. You may find these sites helpful:

You can find maps and aerial photos of the local area at Street map and Multimap – just type in the UCP Marjon postcode (PL6 8BH).

Schengen Visa

The Schengen states are a group of European countries which have signed an agreement to allow free circulation of people within the territory of the member countries. A visa issued by any member state is then also valid for travel to all the other states which recognise the passport.

The Schengen visa should be applied for at the consulate of the country which is the main destination for the first trip. On a tour of Europe this would be the country where the most number of nights are spent. If there is no main destination then it is processed by the first country of entry. Once the visa is issued by any state it is valid for all the other Schengen states as well.

To apply you must have a UK residence permit (student visa, work permit etc) issued for more than six months and it must have more than three months remaining on it after the end of the trip (6 months for Italy, 1 month for France). Visitors to the UK cannot normally apply.

The processing time is normally just a few days, but can be 2 weeks for certain nationals and some consulates in London run appointment schemes which can take many weeks at busy times.

General Requirements

  • Valid Passport
  • Completed Application Form (available to down-load from the consulate)
  • Passport photos
  • Confirmation of booking and payment for your travel and accommodation
  • Recent letter from UCP Marjon confirming your studies
  • Recent bank statement showing proof of sufficient funds (about £40 per day)
  • Proof of travel insurance
