Electrical Appliances

If you are living on campus you are provided with an electric kettle and an iron in your kitchen.  We do not provide hairdryers, rice cookers, toasters or any other appliances.

Appliances in the UK run on a 220-240 voltage system.  If you have an appliance that runs on this voltage, or on dual voltage, then you will be able to use it in the UK .  If you have an appliance that runs on 110 volts (as many are from the USA ) then you will need to buy a transformer in order to use that appliance in the UK .  If you use an appliance with the incorrect voltage it is a fire hazard, so it is a good idea to check with the accommodation officer if you are unsure about something that you have brought from home.  If you are staying in a homestay you should talk with your host about using any electrical appliances you have brought from home.

On the left was a picture of the kind of plug we use in Britain .  It is called a 3 pin electrical wall plug.  If you want to use one of your own electrical appliances then you will need an adapter plug.  You may be able to find one of these before you leave home, but it is also possible to buy one here on arrival for about £5.

Toasters and hairdryers are relatively inexpensive in the UK (under £10).  Rice cookers however are not so common and so if you are able to bring one it may be a good idea to do that.
