What clothes should I bring?

This is a very good question!  The weather in Britain is very changeable and unpredictable.  The South West has a lot of rain, but is also often a lot warmer than other areas of Britain .  The temperatures in winter may reach freezing, but we do not often get any snow.  That does not mean that you will not feel cold!  Depending on what you are used to you may find the months of January, February and March very cold and it will often be wet, icy and misty.  When spring comes in April, May and June the temperatures will rise, but often still staying cold at night.  You will still need warm clothes.  British summer time is considered to be July and August.  We can have very, very hot weather in the summer and it can be very dry.  On the other hand, last summer it was often cold and wet.  As you can see it is very hard to predict the weather and so very difficult to say what clothes you will need.  Come prepared for all weathers and you will be OK!

What is the weather like in Plymouth this week?

A waterproof jacket with a hood and walking shoes that are waterproof are essential for coping with local weather conditions.  It is better to bring lots of layers of clothes rather than one big, heavy coat.  Umbrellas can be hazardous because they tend to turn inside out in the wind, but they are still useful to have.  Some light weight clothes for the summer, a light jacket for the spring will be useful.  There are many shops in Plymouth so you can buy anything you may have forgotten, but the cost of clothes in Britain can be quite high.  Do your shopping at the markets and in the frequent sales and you will find clothes for sale at a cheaper price.

Smart or Casual?

The dress code at UCP Marjon is very casual and students do not need to dress in smart clothes for their classes.  However, you should bring some smart clothes with you for school visits, teaching practice and other more formal events that may be arranged.
