You said, we listened
Student feedback is essential and here in UCP Marjon Library we listen to what you say and make sure that your opinions and suggestions are considered and action taken where we can. This web page is designed to keep you up to date with developments in the Library that have happened in response to your feedback.
You said: the ground floor is old fashioned and dull
We have : refurbished the ground floor to create a bright, airy and welcoming space
You said: overnight loans are too inflexible
We have: replaced them with 3 days loans - just look for the orange spine dot! AND we ensure they are never due back on a Saturday or a Sunday
You said: there isn’t enough space for group work
We have: 2 bookable group work rooms on the 1st floor, ask at the issue desk for more details
You said: there aren't enough power sockets on the ground floor
We have: installed extra power sockets on the ground floor
You said: we need more group study tables
We have: added more tables to the ground floor
You said: we'd like to browse the Short Loan section
We have : arranged for Short Loan items to be freely accessible on open shelving
You said: sometimes the queues are really long and I’m just returning a couple of books!
We have: purchased a book return box, so now you can just drop your books off! This is emptied at least 3 times a day
You said: We need a drinks facility in the library
We have: installed a vending machine on the ground floor. You are also allowed to consume bottled or lidded drinks and cold food on all floors of the library. We just ask that you don’t bring in hot food.
You said: other students are too noisy in the 2nd floor study area
We say: just let any member of staff know and they will address the situation
You said: we need more texts available as e-books.
We say: we are checking every book order placed to see if it is available as an e-book.
You said: the Library system is always ‘down’ when I try to renew my books online which means I have to bring them into the Library
We say: it is very rare that our system is down, but apologies if it has affected you. Remember you can always email us and ring us if you have problems! Our contact details are on your Library card, on the date slip of your books and also on our website
You said: there are never enough copies of key texts
We say: please let staff at the Enquiry Desk know, and we will contact your tutor and ask them to order more. We recommend a ratio of 1 copy per 10 students, and that at least 1 copy of every book on your reading list should be stocked
You said: its no good emailing us when a book is overdue, we need to know beforehand!
We have: upgraded our Library system and we can now email pre overdue notices
You said: we need longer opening hours before dissertation hand in
We say: we will be open till 9 and have professional staff available for any enquiries on the 19th and 20th of March, from the 16th to 18th of April and from the 30th April till the 8th of May (excluding the 7th of May which is a bank holiday)
You said: we need help with accessing and using the e-resources
We say: the Assistant Librarian can run subject specific sessions for your group – just ask your tutor to arrange this. Or drop in to the Enquiry Desk for a 1-to-1 demo
You said: we need faster better quality photocopiers and printers
We have: installed new multi functional devices (MFDs) on the ground and first floor.
You said: it’s not helpful to have separate printing and photocopying credits
We have: combined the two systems so now you just have one lot of credit that you can use for both printing and copying.
You said: Why are fines so high?
We say: fines are the way Libraries encourage you to return books on time, so other students have the opportunity to use them too.
The charges are comparable with other academic Libraries. You can renew in person, by phone or online so you don’t incur fines.
You said: if a book is really overdue can that person be charged additional fines so the book will be returned?
We say: if a book is 3 or more days overdue, please fill in a recall form and we will send a recall email to the person with the overdue book. Recall fines are 75p per day in addition to other fines accruing. Make sure you have also reserved the book on the system.
